Dennis Frank Adcock

H e was the son of Police Sergeant Frank Adcock and Mrs May Mildred Adcock of the Railway Inn, Docking, and before being called up he used to work at Mr Lawson's shop (the present Post Office Stores) in Station Road, Docking. He was serving with 6th Battalion, The Royal Norfolk Regiment (Private 5778168), in Malaya at the time of his death on 26th January 1942, aged 26 years. 6th Battalion, The Royal Norfolk Regiment was then engaged in confused and savage fighting as it withdrew from Senggarang in western Johore, through a forested and rubber estate covered environment, towards Singapore, harried continuously by the advancing Japanese forces, by day and by night. They were plagued all the time by food and ammunition shortages, poor radio communications and uncertainty. His name is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial (Column 49) in Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore, one of 24,000 soldiers and airmen united in service to the British Crown who gave their lives but who have no known grave.
