H
e lived in Docking before being called up and he worked as a Chauffeur at Stanhoe Hall. He was serving with 7th Battalion, The Royal Norfolk Regiment (Private 5774271), as a driver for his company commander, in the St Valery area of north western France when he died on 12th June 1940, aged 21 years. His name is commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial (Column44) in the British War Graves Section of Dunkirk Town Cemetery, and in the company of many others he has no known grave. By 4th June 1940, the evacuation of British forces from Dunkirk had been completed, and at the end of the battle for France elements of the remaining British troops fell back to St Valery, about 25 miles south west of Dieppe, expecting to be evacuated by sea to England, closely followed by german armoured forces, but thick fog on the night 11th/12th June 1940 prevented this. Over 8,000 British soldiers fell into German hands, with only some 1,350 escaping. Reginald Utteridge died in the confusion and fighting of the final night at St Valery, as did his company commander with him.
