Percy Ward

S on of Mr and Mrs Edward Ward of Woodcock's Yard, and laterFakenham Road, Docking, he was married to Susan Cambria Ward of Gateshead, Durham. His father was a farm worker for Mr Deacon. He was serving with 6th Battalion, The Royal Norfolk Regiment (Private 5780351), who were deployed in the defence of Malaya and Singapore against the advancing Japanese army, when he died on 18th January 1942, aged 29 years. His name is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial (Column53), in Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore, one of 24,000 soldiers and airmen united in service to the British Crown who have no known grave. At the time of his death, 6th Battalion, The Royal Norfolk Regiment was operating in the Yong Peng to Batu Pahat part of Johore, Malaya, endeavouring to keep vital roads open in the face of confused conditions and ferocious Japanese attacks, impeded by difficulties in communication, shortage of food and ammunition and a forested environment, before the final withdrawal to Singapore.
